Road
Ipswich occupies a strategically
significant position at the crossroads
of the A12 and the A14 trunk roads.
The A12 south of Ipswich connects the
town and east Suffolk, including the
Port of Felixstowe to London, the South
East and beyond. The A14 is also a key
part of the Strategic Road Network and
is an internationally important route
linking the Port of Felixstowe to the
Midlands, the Northern Powerhouse,
Wales and Ireland.
The A12 north of Ipswich is the
strategic link to the national road
network for Lowestoft and the whole
of east Suffolk.
Greater London can be reached by car
in an hour and 15 minutes. Cambridge
can be reached in an hour.
Rail
Ipswich is an important rail interchange
on the London to Norwich main line.
Planned improvements to the Great
Eastern Mainline will bring Ipswich
within an hour of The City and 30
minutes from Norwich. Ipswich Railway
Station also connects the mainline to:

the east-west line to Cambridge
and Peterborough and then
on to the East Coast Mainline;

the East Suffolk Line
to Lowestoft; and

the Felixstowe line
Sea
A short distance from the Port of
Felixstowe, the biggest and busiest
container port in the UK and one
of the largest in Europe, connecting to
the A14 part of the Trans-European
Transport Network. Stena Line operates
a route to Harwich (32 miles from
Ipswich) from the Hook of Holland.
Air
London Stansted is 50 miles from
Ipswich. National Express coaches offer
travel from Stansted to Ipswich via
connections from Heathrow and
Gatwick airports. Norwich Airport and
London Southend is also easily reached
from Ipswich.
Getting Around
Ipswich is well served by buses to the
town centre as well as services linking
to many Suffolk towns and villages, a
Park & Ride service and a free shuttle
bus the loops the town centre at
lunchtime. Urbo dockless bike
sharing scheme was launched in 2018,
providing 500 app operated bikes in
Ipswich for short distance commutes,
business journeys and exploring the
town and parks.
Digital Connectivity
Broadband connectivity is a key
component of the infrastructure offer
that a city can make to businesses,
entrepreneurs and residents. The
development of optical fibre has
considerably increased broadband
speeds, 90% of Ipswich premises
have access to ‘ultrafast’
